It’s nothing new when we hear that big companies are twisting the facts up to maximize their profits. Whether it be Haagen-Dazs hiring dancers to do completely humiliating public service announcements or record companies tugging the strings of their “puppets” aka exploiting artists for profits, these things don’t surprise us and are classic examples of our culture being misrepresented.

Haagen Dazs’ campaign to save the honeybees….and the dancers

Honestly, one thing that we often blame for the watering down of the culture is social media or just the internet as a whole. Information is way too easily accessed and people are a few clicks away from taking in all the wrong “facts”. But the internet has also shifted the business world. It’s pushed consumers away from stepping foot into their doors and now these businesses are trying to get closer to us. But, what does this mean for us? It means businesses have to listen. No longer can a business think one bad customer isn’t going to hurt them. I wrote a blog about a bad experience with a college’s financial aid department once. As a result, I wasn’t able to attend the semester until someone found my post, got in contact with me and immediately fixed the issue to put me back into school the following semester. What happened was my blog post appeared at the top of the google results when you searched the college’s financial aid department and that wasn’t a good look. They made the effort to fix it in return I update my post stating that they made things right.

“This is something we can all take from and it’s something we’ve been saying for a long time: Speak up for yourselves.”

Before (left) the community spoke up and after (right)

Another case in point? Puma. The majority of you reading this probably own at least one pair of ‘Suedes. They’ve become a token of Bboy/Bgirl culture (same with the Shelltoes, Gazelles, etc.). So what happened when Puma posted a photo on their instagram of a young dancer doing some awkward freeze? (or cheek freeze as someone called it, haha) The community posted their concerns. Some comments more vulgar than others but there was a point to be made. We joined the conversation as mediator to see if Puma would correct this by posting a better representation of a Bboy or Bgirl rocking their gear. Within a few days, it happened; Puma posted a photo of Roxrite mid-freeze at a competition wearing a pair of black & tan ‘Suedes and the community immediately approved.

This is something we can all take from and it’s something we’ve been saying for a long time: Speak up for yourselves. Social media was and still is a useful tool for the community. We are in the era of the consumer. That means we can tell a business when they’re doing us dirty and push them to correct their mistakes or end up facing a backlash from the community. When companies make things right, it’s not just the community that wins—everybody wins. Nobody is going to stop buying Pumas at this point and I wouldn’t be surprised if Puma decided to start sponsoring jams or getting involved with the community. With the Battle of the Year movie just around the corner, it wouldn’t be a bad move for them. We just have to make sure they respect the culture in doing so.

Oh yeah, there are people who are always questioning why Bboys & Bgirls are “mad” or so “closed-minded” but I think what we’re not realizing is that many of us see this as more than a dance; it’s OUR culture. In international business, you have to keep in mind your target region’s cultures and ethics before you step foot on their soil. Why is this any different? Stop attacking us for speaking up when we feel disrespected. We’re not just speaking up for ourselves but for the integrity of our culture. People fight to defend their ethnic cultures and religion and this is no exception. I also overread someone saying they “evolved” FROM a Bboy into other forms of dance. That doesn’t even make sense. We don’t evolve FROM being humans, we evolve AS humans. The underlying foundation never leaves, it develops. But if you stopped breaking then I guess natural selection is just taking its course, right?

Just something to think about.

P.S. Nasty Ray deserves a shout out for this one! LOL!

During the first weekend of May, the city of Salzburg hosted the fifth edition of Circle Industry, one of the World’s illest 2on2 bboy battles. In addition, the weekend also featured a fresh battle concept called Checkmate that’s inspired by the game of chess and was founded by Mike and FraGue.

The jam featured a dope line-up of judges featuring Poe One, Pluto and Cima. DJs included B-Ryan, Woo-D, and Cosmic. Collectively, this was going to be a promising three-day weekend.

On Friday, prelims took place with over 60 crews representing. The level of skill was quite high, but only the eight best crews would advance to the finals on Saturday, where they would face eight other invited crews.

Saturday was set off with Redbull BC One Austria, followed by the 2on2 Circle Industry World Finals. Some of the invited crews were eliminated in the first round and inevitably melted into the audience to watch the rest of the battles go down.

The defending champs, Supernaturalz crew from Canada, with Morris replacing Dyzee, battled alongside Puzzles but lost in the quarterfinals to Kid David and Roxrite of Renegades crew.

Worth mentioning was Polskee Flavour that as a qualified crew from Friday, made it close to the finals. In a tight semifinal battle, judges gave two ties with Jinjo eventually beat the Polish bboys and making their way to the finals. Korea vs USA—Jinjo vs Renegades, came hard at each other, but the US bboys took the W and became the official 2013 Circle Industry Champs.

The Checkmate battles were scheduled to take place on Sunday. This was a really dope concept where strategy played the most important role for victory and put all entering crews to the test. After some really dope top 8 battles, like the Italian Last Alive Crew vs Jinjo, Checkmate moved into the semifinals.

The Squadron faced many upcoming bboys including “The Queen” Lussy Sky from Ukraine who was looking to take out Squadron’s queen, Kid David. Since a queen is the only one who can bring back the defeated bboys who lost their rounds, the strategy was clear: beat the opponent’s queen to make it easier to win the battle. After some very close rounds, the US crew managed to win and advance to the finals.

In the second semifinal, the Ruggeds were pitted up against Jinjo. This ended up being a 20-minute battle with Vero, the last man standing of Jinjo, doing back to back rounds and impressively defeating some of his opponents only to eventually get eliminated.

Finals took place between the Ruggeds and the Squadron. The US bboys had a solid strategy and won the battle in five rounds, without Kid David entering the battle, since there was no need to bring any of the Squadron back.

After the finals, the jam finished up with the Dutch bboys calling out Squadron with Tawfiq and Poe One jumping in and taking sides.

Checkmate Semifinale:
The Squadron (USA) vs Magic Front (Ukraine)
The Ruggeds (Holland) vs Jinjo (Korea)

Checkmate Finale:
The Squadron (USA) vs The Ruggeds (Holland)

Here’s a Redbull video recap from the entire weekend put together by Miniboj.

And the final checkmate battle with the call out below:

Starting this week, Style Elements will be releasing exclusive footage weekly, with interviews, clips, photos, projects, knowledge, and more up until the Style Elements 19th Year Anniversary on June 21-23 in San Jose, CA. For more info, visit bit.ly/StyleElements for the official Facebook event page where the updates will source from, and visit www.styleelementscrew.com for more information and future presale ticket deals. Our first video is an interview with the legendary Mr. Wiggles (Rocksteady /Electric Boogaloos / Universal Zulu Nation / TC5) as he details the influence and significance of Style Elements from his perspective as one of the pioneers of the dance, and how the torch of the culture had been passed down through the years leading up to the current day. The 19th Anniversary marks a special return of Style Elements, who, though never leaving the community, have not been as active as an entity since the mid-2000s. SEC, with the induction of 9 new members since 2011, have rekindled a flame and returned with gasoline. Here to preserve the culture, push the boundaries in all elements of hip hop, and ensure that originality, the creation of your own ideas, and that dance as a medium of self-discovery & self-definition remain a core tenet of the culture as we push on into the next era of b-boying, the Style Elements Monsta Squad is back—

Although, they never left…being that, in the words and name of Poe O.N.E. (SEC), Originality Never Ends.

Style Elements

Zulu Kings, Rocksteady, Battle Squad, Style Elements. To any serious fan of dance and b-boy culture, these names are canon amongst few others—they’re forever etched in history because of their accomplishments and effect on hundreds of thousands if not millions of lives. Every videotape that got copied to the point of near unrecognizability led to one dancer getting inspired, and in turn another, and from there an entire scene is made/shaped, and then more students get affected, and it goes on and on. For myself, as a student of the game, and a dancer who grew up in the information saturation era of the forum boards & YouTube, these were the first names you study once that light clicks in your mind telling you how important, beneficial, and enjoyable it is to learn about your culture. I’ve always imagined a family tree diagram, built on years and years of research, of how much influence of movement vocabulary originates from these crews, not just in Bboy culture but in dance period.

In the 1990s, b-boy culture didn’t exist as a large, interconnected community like we take for granted today, where with a few clicks and social connectors you can find, contact, and meet up with bboys in any part of the world.
However, it is easy for young dancers to not be familiar with such powerful names, and it is not our job to blame them for their ignorance but rather to guide them and instruct them. With such widespread availability of knowledge/information, and the transformation of not just our culture but most if not all subcultures from a community of place (Billy and Sandy live in the Bronx, that’s their community) to a community of interest (Billy and Sandy meet at a practice they found on the internet, then go home to their neighborhoods and other friends) over the stretch of the 1970s to 2013, we’ve lost touch with our oral traditions—telling the history and importance of battles, people, crews to our younger generation with the sort of emotional attachment in the storytelling that impressionable youth don’t often forget. The main way of teaching used to be through videotapes, which preceded the DVDs and online videos. In the 1990s, people used to pass around tapes of Style Elements videos like needles in the Jazz era. They cherished their most prized videos, afraid that if they lent their video to someone else that that meant it was gone forever (which it often was). Mary Fogarty, a professor of Dance & Cultural Sociology & Canadian B-girl teaching at York University, Toronto, writes that these videos of Style Elements, 7 Gems Magazine, Rocksteady, Battle of the Year, Renegades, etc. created “transnational video networks” and “imagined affinities” between dancers from separated parts of the world.

And that’s one of the key tenets of Hip Hop PERIOD: Originality. You were an herb, a toy, a lame if you didn’t have your own style back in the day.

Style Elements Stage Performance

In the 1990s, b-boy culture didn’t exist as a large, interconnected community like we take for granted today, where with a few clicks and social connectors you can find, contact, and meet up with bboys in any part of the world. Fogarty posits that through these videos people still felt connected to one another and shared an identity, even if never meeting one another (can you imagine watching these incredible, inspiring strangers killing it on tapes, and then they pop up in front of you at a club or at a jam?). Before Facebook, before YouTube, before forums—all you had were these videos to get your inspiration and you appreciated them. But why? Why was this videotape era so critical to b-boying and its survival, and eventual flourishing into legitimate, self-organized subculture & industry around the world?

One word: Fresh. An overused word in our culture, being that anything good to folks is ‘fresh’; anything that makes you happy and you think is noteworthy, becomes ‘fresh’. Just like the word awesome, its meaning has been lost. But ‘fresh’ means what it says: when something so new, so original affects you in such a way that you won’t be able to forget it, that’s fresh. And that’s one of the key tenets of Hip Hop PERIOD: Originality. You were an herb, a toy, a lame if you didn’t have your own style back in the day. People thought breaking was dead but the Germans (Battle Squad) made sure that it wasn’t by innovating the dance and bringing it back to the source, New York. On the West Coast, hip hop culture remained a social experience throughout the golden era of hip hop (late 80s to early 90s) which in turn affected and set the stage for Style Elements to create a completely different foundation, break apart the rules of the dance, and piece it back together as Wiggles said.

It is hard to pinpoint exactly why Style Elements just “had it” and why their contributions and impact were undeniable while so many others faced persecution. What is harder to do is to deny the influence they exacted. Members of the crew invented the Airchair, Stacking Freezes as a style, contributions to the Air Flare, influential variations and styles of complex threading, dancing upside down, and even influenced the world spiritually in their connection to music. These were the moves the Koreans perfected when they catapulted to the world stage in the early 2000s. These moves have become the basic foundation of nearly every dancer today.

…the community. We are all in this together, though divided by our perspectives and biases, grudges built on top of immaturity, and strong willed opinions.
As a student of the game, I don’t really know why it all came together…it just simply was. This collection of individuals just happened to become brothers in Modesto and Stockton, California, then added members from San Jose, then a vivacious, vicious, voracious MC from Oakland, then a pair of East LA brothers and Pasadena circle monster from Southern California. And even now, as a member of the crew, I still don’t know why. I’ve written academic papers on the culture, traveled, done countless interviews, battled, built, argued—exhausting the growing list. Could it be the proximity of California to New York? I’ve thought about it like a ripple emanating from New York, going across the pond to Europe and the West Coast first, with California being far enough away but still with a rooting in American culture and its own identity that something with the timing of SEC just…clicked? I don’t know. I’m not sure I ever will. However, even with all these questions unanswered, the blessing is just to be in the presence of a movement, a rebuilding process—faster, stronger, smarter, better—with a potential untapped and a larger story to be told.

We are working hard to fulfill that limitless potential, but that begins with the only certain factor that contributed to the rise and reputation of Style Elements: the community. We are all in this together, though divided by our perspectives and biases, grudges built on top of immaturity, and strong willed opinions. We’re b-boys and b-girls, that’s just who we are. Just because Hip Hop created something beautiful from a crazy, warped reality in the 1970s doesn’t mean the crazy parts just get left behind…but the culture is 40 years old this year. If we’re a culture built by youth and focused on retaining the freedom of being young, free, and expressive, then it’s about time we found footing as a mature adult to allow ourselves to do that in a healthy manner. We pay respect to our elders and offer what wisdom we can to our young, and organize the best we can the more we learn about how the world works and our place in it. From this understanding, we invite you to come celebrate with us at the Style Elements 19th Anniversary Jam—and we mean Jam. Like every other Style Elements event, we cultivate a vibe and this will be a party with cyphers, circles, love, aggression, and self-expression under the warm blanket of great music & good people. Please join us and help us take it to the next level, because we are nothing without you as you are without us. In the end, we are O.N.E.

Originality Never Ends.

In May 2011, my documentary film Among B-Boys – that shares stories about the intersection of breaking and Hip Hop culture, and the Central California and Midwest Hmong youth community – premiered at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. From there it would garner the audience choice award for best documentary, and quietly embark on a tour of niche Asian American film festivals, college campuses, and community centers, around the country. We’ve been celebrated by sold out audiences and humbled by audience sizes that counted on one hand. We’ve collaborated with Profowon to throw a footwork jam and workshop during “National B-Boy Week” in Los Angeles and screened in Kathmandu, Nepal. Along each stop we’ve accumulated fan after fan, some having waited for years to see this work, and others who had no idea and we snagged along the way.

“I feel like I just watched MY story in this film. I feel like these guys (the B-Boys in the film) are my family!”
- Popmaster Fabel

Villn, Air Steps, Wizardz, Velocity

If you’ve never heard of who the Hmong in the U.S. are, they are an Asian ethnic group who have their own language, culture and customs, but are without a land to call their own. The Hmong community came as refugees, because of their involvement fighting for the C.I.A. in the Secret War in Laos and the Vietnam War. I learned about the story of Hmong B-Boys from college roommates who were from Fresno, CA, one of the largest Hmong communities in the country. I learned that they were part of the legacy of great 1990’s breaking scene that would produce innovators of many of the power moves and combinations we have today, that came out of the California Central Valley, guys like Charles Montgomery and Pablo Flores of Soul Control/Climax Crew. There were a lot, but the first generation mostly stopped. But the legacy of those early B-Boys extends to new generations of B-Boys and B-Girls, notably Villn and M-Pact of Underground Flow, B-Boy Sukie and the Soul Rivals in Tulsa, OK, and the generation following them, not depicted in the film, like the Looney Tunes Crew in Minnesota, and countless more.

Kendrick, RJ, Chris in Tulsa

“In the 1990’s when I was a teen, the faces and races and diversity in Hip Hop were not what it is today, and back then I felt like you constantly had your motives questioned, being Asian American in Hip Hop.”

I wanted to share this story because I was hungry for stories about other Asian Americans like myself who loved participating in the elements of Hip Hop, and their stories. In the 1990’s when I was a teen, the faces and races and diversity in Hip Hop were not what it is today, and back then I felt like you constantly had your motives questioned, being Asian American in Hip Hop.

Popmaster Fabel, PaperSon, Mpact, & Villn

Today, it might be taken a little for granted. In searching for the answers to my personal questions, I think I found a story that is relatable and engaging, whether you are Hmong, B-Boy, or neither. Recently at the Breakin’ The Law Festival and World Finals in Madison, WI, the legendary Popmaster Fabel said of the film, “I feel like I just watched MY story in this film. I feel like these guys (the B-Boys in the film) are my family!”

If that wasn’t validation enough for this humble, independently produced film, after two years of promotions and screenings, our efforts have culminated in a distribution deal for Public Television (PBS + independent stations) in the month of May in celebration of Asian Pacific Heritage Month. What began as a five minute short film in 2004 created with a film fellowship with the Los Angeles organization Visual Communications, and shepherded along by San Francisco’s Center for Asian American Media has finally broken out for not only the Asian American and Hip Hop/Breaking communities, but to the entire U.S. While Fabel’s declaration might seem on the verge of exaggeration, it is these stories that strengthen our bonds as people and society. The B-Boys and B-Girls in my film, and those whom I have met along the way, they are family.

It was the first mom + pop boutique in Orlando to introduce streetwear brands such as The Hundreds, Crooks, 10 Deep, and Hellz Bellz before they gained mainstream popularity, and they humbly made room on their shelves to help surge Florida based brands such as Nufsed, Bofresco, and Biggest & Baddest. Above all, Reign was a super dope cultural hub that hosted many memorable events promoting the local car, art, and hip hop scenes here in Orlando. One of our favorites in particular was an event called Sunday Skool Session, which we are excited to announce is making it’s return here at The Bboy Spot this May! Sunday Skool Session is an all ages, family oriented event consisting of bboy battles, DJ scratch sessions, local vendors & exhibitors, great music, BBQ, and that good old block party vibe that brings the community together.

Check out these clips from Sunday Skools past, and if you’re in Central Florida, make sure to come out and kick it with us on May 19th!

Winter 2013, Massive Monkees were granted a beautiful 2000+ square foot studio space in the International District of Seattle. Titled “The Beacon”, Massive Monkees have used this grant of space to teach, perform and bring people together through community events. In just over 3 months of operation, nearly 400 students have signed up for classes at the Beacon! In addition, we have partnered with and now host some of the best teaching artists from the Northwest and from around the world. The Beacon has also successfully launched a free after school program along with Massive Monkees’ partner organization, Extraordinary Futures, the nation’s first dance-based leadership program.

Unfortunately our term with Storefronts Seattle is soon coming to an end but we are hoping to keep the studio open. Here is how YOU can help KEEP THE BEACON LIT!

We will be launching an online fundraising campaign on April 20th 2013 to make necessary studio upgrades to continue operations long-term for our students, performers and community partnerships. The countdown to this fundraiser launch begins today!

The Beacon is just getting started and we have had an amazing amount of success far beyond what we could have ever expected. We recognize this success does not happen without the support of our community. Thank you to all who have supported Massive Monkees & The Beacon and Thank you in advance to all who will support us in this mission to KEEP THE BEACON LIT! – Massive Monkees

We proudly support Massive Monkees in their mission to continue building in their community, and we hope that you do too. If you are interested in learning more about The Beacon, or if you would like to support this great cause, you can do so by contributing to their KickStarter fundraiser page here.

To raise awareness about our culture and show the public that Hip Hop is not limited to 50 Cent, shiny jewelry, and objectifying women, we decided to organize a bunch of Hip Hop events in shopping malls throughout Slovakia called BREAKIN’ TOUR.

The jam will take place in different cities around Slovakia to bring new kids in this culture and inspire cats that don’t really travel outside their city. Competing bboys and bgirls that make it to top 8 will earn points in each edition.

After all the preliminary rounds in different cities, the best eight crews with the highest score will battle invited international crews for the ultimate title of BREAKIN’ TOUR 2013 champs at the end of the year.

We organized the first edition of BREAKIN’ TOUR this past Saturday at the OC Centro mall in Nitra, Slovakia. Even though the jam took place in the mall, the vibe was dope topped with fresh breakbeats cut by DJ Plash from Poland.

The audience, who probably perceived Hip Hop kids as drunk, always high with no contribution to society, suddenly admired the art of bboys and bgirls on the dance floor.

Seeing the family atmosphere and brotherhood outside of battles, some people realized that breakin’ is more than just a dance. It is a culture with its unique dress code, postures, gestures, characters. Each One. Teach One.

Slovak Hip Hop “celebrity” Johnny Perfekto on the mic and international judges Yarko (Poland), Mike (Czech Republic) and MG (Slovakia) promised a good jam. The “mall” jam featured a live graffiti expo as well, with writer Ceil doing his thing inside the mall.

Bboys and bgirls from Poland and Slovakia battled to get into the top 8, getting them first points of the tour. The final battle took between Don Tias & Meme (Stred crew / Slovakia) and Greku & Zofia (Lion Kingz / Poland). The Polish duo finally won in a very close battle.

BREAKIN’ TOUR vol.1 results:

1. Zofia, Greku / Poland (10 points)
2. Meme, Don Tias (8 points)
3. Fesak, Kaso (6 points)
4. Miniboj, El Prcinho (5 points)
5. Mike, Smolko (4 points)
6. Hadzik a Staszek / Poland (3 pts)
7. Kubik, Jendo (2 points)
8. Kein, Adam (1 point)

As a part of the BREAKIN’ TOUR, we organized the third round of BRKN International – Slovakia. You can see the results and the video recap from the entire jam in the following Redbull video by Miniboj.

We are already looking forward to the second round of BREAKIN’ TOUR and 4th round of BRKN International- Slovakia that will take place on May 25, in Zilina, Slovakia. See you there!

Be about it! If you want something done, do it yourself. The means to create and make change are at one’s finger tips. The internet and technology is very accessible in this day and age. Hip-Hop and Breaking culture are at a pivotal point in which it is make or break situation (no pun intended). The general consensus is that we want to keep our art form as raw and positive as possible, free from corporate corruption and/or interruption. It is us as a community that should be the forerunners of the movement. We dictate the power of influence in the culture.
There are numerous examples of independent projects that have taken off in the past couple of years that are a testament to the soul and innovation of the community. For example, Havikoro crew and the All the Way Live foundation contribute internationally to the growing Hip-Hop movement. Countries such as India, El Salvador, etc are exposed to modes of expression that are personally liberating and give hope for the future of the impoverished and struggling. Documentation of endeavors such as these are circulated through Youtube and public media inspiring others to take initiative. Within the United States itself, there has been a push for self-sufficiency within our own industry. Self-made brands and products are raising the standards for others to follow. Kings without Crowns, Be Twn The Brks, and Nufsed are just few amongst many names that are part of the revolution.
What is particularly moving about this attitude of “Do-it-yourself” is the contribution to humanity. What is passion if it isn’t shared and used to assist our fellow man? The story that comes to mind, and that most are aware of, is the recovery of Steelo after suffering from a ruptured brain aneurysm. Not only did the people reach out with monetary donations, but sent messages of encouragement and prayers as well. It seems to have become a great development in our community to become conscious of those in need during dire times. The passing of B-ill, Raze1, and Gerald Casterlow were all tragedies that people not only heard about, but felt through communication on the social network. On the topic of current events, Bboy Cetowy is caught in a coma and is in need of as much support as possible. It is only with help and hope that issues such as these continue to be relevant in the heart and minds of others.
If there are any names I forgot to mention within this movement, I apologize. Then again this just goes to show you that there are people everywhere willing to do something. That being said, if you have complaints and aren’t doing anything about them, you only have yourself to blame. If you aren’t the solution, you are part of the problem. Here are some links with a cause and are a source of inspiration. If you know if any other links to organizations please feel free to share them. Get involved!
